THE BOTANIC GARDEN TODAY
Tuesday, 10 July 2007

The Botanic Garden is a unit of the Biology Department of the Biotechnical Faculty in Ljubljana. It is responsible for presenting native and foreign plants, including plants which flourish in our moderately warm climate, to the general public. Plants requiring a higher ambient humidity and relatively stable temperature throughout the year are kept in the greenhouse where space is fairly limited.

On the surface of 2 ha more than 4500 species, subspecies and forms can be found, a third of them being native plants while the rest are from various parts of Europe and other continents.

Since 1991 the Botanical Garden has been protected as a monument of landscape gardening; as a part of our cultural heritage it will continue to fulfil its mission also in the future.

Celebrating in 2000, the 190th anniversary of its continuous work, the Ljubljana Botanical Garden is the oldest in Slovene cultural, scientific and educational institution.

The greenery of the Garden provides a lovely walks area and relaxation in the tree shade. As it changes with seasons, it is worth visiting several times a year to get a more complete picture of its plant wealth.
